Everyone has experienced anxiety and depression at some point in their life. Not everyone, however, will experience chronic anxiety, obsessive worry, and prolonged depression.

Emotionally resilient people (those with a healthier self-concept) continue to thrive during or after difficult life circumstances. In contrast, those with a weakened resiliency suffer more bouts of prolonged stress or impairment.

Many anxiety and depression sufferers have inherited tendencies to experience a great deal of self-focus and avoidance during stressful times. The environment may have activated these inherited tendencies. Inherited vulnerabilities to certain temperaments or personality traits may lead us to create similar conditions that lead to worry.
